LEMONS AND CEDRI OF SICILY
Femminello lemon
The Femminello lemon is the variety most cultivated in Italy. The term “femminello” refers to high profuctivity, indeed it can reach even five blooms for year.
Depending on the harvest period, we discern three types of lemon: Primofiore, Bianchetto and Verdelli.
- The first bloom, that is from april to may, turns out to be one of the most important for the quantity flowers produced . It gives rise to Primofiore lemons, which ripen to early autumn (october) and they are harvested with the green skin, and to the Winter lemons, which are harvested when they reach the yellow color. This harvest continue until march.
- The second bloom, which occurs between late may and early june, brings to production of fruits called Maiolini or Bianchetti, due to the fact that they have a yellow skin tending to pale.
- The third bloom or summer bloom (july-august), is obtained by the application of the forcing technique. This bloom gives rise to Verdelli lemons, which they are harvested with a green skin.
Quality
Fruit
The fruits have a medium size and a elliptic-spheroid shape.
Peel
The skin has a more or less rough surface and a color varying from light green to yellow.
Pulp
The pulp has a color variable from light green to yellow, with the presence of seeds.
Juice
The juice is abudant, clear and more aromatic with the presence of vitamins as C, A, B and mineral salts.
Lunario lemon
The Lunario lemon is a ancient Sicilian cultivar and it’s also called “lemon four seasons” due to the presence of the fruits of the plant at any time of year. This makes it very suitable for ornamental nurseries and therefore for pot cultivation.
Depending on the harvest period, the fruits are divided into:
- Primofiore (winter lemon from october to march)
- Verdelli (summer lemon from july to september).
The fruits of the Lunario lemon have a cylindrical shape, smooth and slightly thick skin, high juice yield and few seeds.

Peel
The skin is thin, it has a smooth surface and a color that varies from light green to yellow.
Polp
The pulp has a fine texture and an extremely reduced thickness of the films that wrap the slices. They are without seeds.
Juice
The juice results clear and more aromatic with the presence of vitamins as C, A, B and mineral salts.
Cedar
Cedars are known for their medium-large size and for the albedo (internal part of the skin and white in color), which affects the percentage of the order of 60-70% and which constitutes the sweet and edible part. This fruit is sought after by the industries for the essential oils of its extremely fragrant skin. In kitchens it is often eaten with all the skin because it is extremely sweet enough to contrast the sour taste of the pulp.
The harvest period is from December to march.

Fruit
The fruits have a medium-large size.
Peel
The external skin is wrinkled and bright yellow, the inner skin (albedo) is very thick (it makes up 70% of the fruit), white, edible and sweet.
Polp
The pulp is tender and juicy with the presence of seeds.
Juice
The juice is sour and rich in Vitamin C and mineral salts.
