SICILIAN ORANGES
Washington Navel
Washington Navel is the variety most cultivated within our farm. It constitutes the progenitor of the Navel oranges’ group and, because of blond flesh, they are called such as blondes navel. The “Navel” name comes from the presence of a little protuberance, at the opposite side of the stalk that we remember an umbilicus, also named “Navel”. Inside the skin, at the navel, it’s present a twin fruit constituted by little slices. The Washington name concerns at the USA city in which they were conducted the experiments about grow of new grafts. Later, it spread to Sicily since 1928 mainly in Ribera with the “Brasiliano” name, and then, it moves to the adjacent areas.
The ripening period runs from december to march.
Quality
Fruit
The fruits have a medium-large size and a spheroidal shape.
Peel
The skin has a orange color, and it’s easy to remove from flesh.
Pulp
The pulp has a thin texture and an extremely reduced thickness of the films that it envelops the slices. There aren’t seeds.
Juice
The content of juice is high and it has a intense orange color, with the presence of antioxidant vitamin C ,A , D, antioxidant, mineral salts and low acidity.
Navelina
Navelina oranges is other cultivar which belongs to the group of the Navel oranges. It’s highly appreciated for the low acidity that it enhances the sweetness of the juice. It is characterized by an early harvest period respect to the Washington Navel cultivar. Plant, of medium vigor, has a globular growth habit, is resistant to winds and it has an average and constant yield.
The ripening period runs from october to december.

Pulp
The pulp has a coarse and tender texture. It’s orange color and without seeds.
Juice
The juice content is about 33 percent.
Vaniglia
Vanilla oranges belong to the group of oranges with blond flesh. The “Vanil seedless” originated from gemmary mutation of Vaniglia with seeds, which it took place in the Ribera territory and then, it spread throughout the area.
Thanks to the low content of sugars and acids, Vaniglia orange is recommendes for those who suffering from glycemia or gastro-intestinal problems.

The peel is smooth and easily detachable from the pulp, it differs from the varieties of the Navel group because it doesn’t have a navel.
Pulp
The pulp is without seeds. It has a low thickness of films that it wraps the slices, such as to dissolve in the mouth.
Juice
The juice has a sweet and vanilla-flavoured taste, from which the name derives, despite this it has low content of acids(0,06–0,15%) and sugars. It contains citric acid, vitamins and mineral salts.

Oranges to juice
They have small sizes with a weight below 200 grams (size 7-8) and they make suitable to the production of fresh juices with a high vitamin C content. They also recommend to prepare delicious jams.
Oranges medium category (table oranges)
They are oranges with medium-large sizes (size 4-5) with a weight that varies from 200 grams to 300 grams. This type of oranges should be tasted after meals or or during the day as a snack. They are also suitable to squeeze.
Extra-large oranges
These are a big sizes with 96-110 mm of diameter and above 300 grams of weight (size 1-2). They are excellent both to eat in slices and to prepare cakes and salads.
